How to play face card poker
In the game of poker, face cards refer to any card in the deck that depicts a member of the royal court (a jack queen and king) which is why they are also sometimes called ‘picture cards’ or ‘paint’. It is not a coincidence that the artwork usually contains some sort of face. The ace is not considered a face card although some players may refer to it as such. This is likely to be confused with the term broadway which can mean any card between a Ten and an Ace.
Some play that a hand with fewer cards beats one with more, for example 27 made up of four cards beats 27 made up of five cards. Others play that picture cards can be counted as either 0.5 or 10 (a player with multiple pictures can choose to count some as 0.5 and others as 10.)
After the initial betting round each player places an agreed initial stake and is dealt two cards face down and one card face up. Once everyone has looked at their cards they have the chance to ask for an extra card, starting with the player to dealer’s left.
